WOMEN'S LABOUR BUREAU.
The women's branch of the Labour Bureau has now been in operation for a month, and, according to Mr 3 Mitchell, the officer in charge, h> has fully justified its establishment. The services of the- Bureau have been invoked by largo numbers of employers and employees, with generally satisfactory results. "There is no difficulty in placing girls in really good situations, with good mistresses," said Mrs Mitchell. "Of course, some girls have fads, or preferences for particular localities, and it may take a day or two to find places which fill their requirements. The. giil who is honestly in search of work can always bo well accommodated. There is an impression abroad tihat girls hare to belong to some union before they can be put on the. books of the Bureau, but this is entirely incorrect." Speaking in regard to tho existence of unemployment among girls, Mrs Mitchell said that the only difficulty experienced, so far, was with girls employed in hotels. There "were busy and slack eeasons in these houses, and girls who had boon engaged in hot>eJs did not as a rule care about accepting situations in private houses where the duties were more onerous and tho hours longer. Many mistresses were recognising this fact, and giving their servants better hours and more eveniog.l off, in order that their places should nob suffer in comparison with hotel situations.
