MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Messrs Thos. Gapes, J.P., and "VV. Hayward, J.P., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Two youths, Wm. Price and Wm. Phillips, had to pay 5s and costs for tho privilege of cycling on tho footpath, while tho fine was increased to 10s and costs in tho cases of John Manson, Leonard Hardio, William Ethridge, and Walter Riddell. Emma Summers, also charged with cycling on tho footpath, was convicted and discharged. A by-law more honoured in the breach than tho observance is the one relating to non-smoking on the railway station plotform. With a. view to bringing the regulation moro prominently beforo the public, the police brought a charge of smoking on tho platform against P. McDougall, who was fined 5s and costs.

A first offender for drunkenness was convicted and discharged.

.David Courtney, a young man, who is at present serving a term of imprisonment in the Lyttelton. Gaol for assault, and robbery, appeared on a charge of the theft of £7" 10s from tho person of Michael Ryan. Accused asked for a remand to enable him to obtain the services of a solicitor, also stating that his brother was coming down from Wellington to help him. Chief Detective Bishop objected to tho remand, on the ground that witnesses had been brought from Oamaru and elsewhere.

Accused: I only got notice of the case on Thursday, or the day before. The Chief Detective stated tho prisoner had had every facility for communicating with a solicitor and hia friends if ho had wished to do so. Ho pointed out tho inconvenience that would arise in regard to the witnesses if the caso were remanded for any length of time. Accused: The police can get a remand for a week when they want it.

Eventually the Bench decided to grant a remand till to-day.

Messrs G. A. Lewin, J.P.. and C. Cook, J.P.. presided at the Lyttelton Court yesterday morning.

A first offender for drunkenness was fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment.

James Madder was fined 10s and costs for breaking two panes of glass in a house on tho Bridle Path, and was ordered to pay the damage, 10s, in default seven days' imprisonment.
