TIMARU.

.The annual meeting of the Timaru Licensing Committee was held yesterday, when the police report was of a satisfactory nature, and all the licenses were renewed. Sub-Inspector Green said that improvements were required at some of the hotels, but tho approach of the general election, and the risk of no-license beiug carried, made the owners loath to undertake very extensive improvements. A letter was received from tho New Zealand Alliance j drawing attention to tho prevalence of drinking by women in hotols, and asking the Committee to make enquiries regarding the condition of things in this respect in Timaru. Sub-Inspector Green said that he had made enquiries and found that there had been no increase in the number of women drinking in hotels at Timaru. There was very little at any time. During last year, only five arrests were made of females for drunkenness.
