MAYORAL INSTALLATIONS.
KEW BRIGHTON,
The installation of Mr James Glanville as Mayor of New Brighton took place last Wednesday night. There were present, besides the Mayor-elect, and the retiring Mayor (Mr G. D. Macfarlane). tho Councillors and about thirty Visitors, including Messrs /C. H. Winny and G. Mclntyre, exMnyora/ After the formal installation the new Mayor delivered an address in which he said he had sat urder all tho previous Mayors of the borough and had, therefore, obtained a fair amount of training in municipal matters. Ho hoped that when his term of office expired it would be found to . have been profitab'e and pleasurable, and in this ho largely relied on the assistance of the Councillors. .
At the invitation of the new Mayor, ttoso present remained after the ceremony while a number of toasts were proposed. After the loyal toasrfc. tho notiring Mayor proposed the toast of "The ■Mayor of New Brighton," and in his reply Mr GlartviHo said that, being an old residerot, he was pleased the ratepayers had! paid him the high compliment of plaoing him in the Mayoral chair. >
Cr. J. B. Scoblc proposed the toast of "The Retiring Mayor." In -his reply, Mr Macfarkuio "said that at tho hinchcon to coiobrate the opening of the electric tramways to Now Brighton, ho had told tho then Ohairman of the Tram-way Board (Mr Recce) that the electrification of the tramways would bring many surprises to the Board, and one of the greatest had been the extraordinary growth of tho traffic on the New Brighton line. A -number of other toasts were also honoured.
