The President said he was unable to attend the ceremony in connection with the Otira tunnel. Mr A. G. How-land had gone to represent tho Association.

'LOCAL INDUSTRIES. WEEK."

A letter was .received from the Grocers' Association enclosing a. list of those who were willing to make special displays of local manufactures during the "Local Industries Wegk.- ,, Mr Charters road an article from a Wellington paper strongly urging the carrying out of special displays of local manufactures, as affording far more solid results to the community than exhibitions. . .

The President said that tho. Farmers' Co-operative Association had expressed sympathy with the movement. A circular bad been drafted' by Mr R. S. Badger, to be sent to the various shopkeepers, asking them, though they might not have manufactures allotted tc them, to make a special display out of their own stock. Arrangements had been made with thirty shopkeepers and manufacturers to make the display.' It was agreed to s&nd out the circular at once.

It was arranged that a eub-«omniittee should bo appointed to allot -til© grocery display, - a:nd Messrs Hart-, Charters and Ford, were selected. .

The President stated that throughout tho manufacturer© had responded fairly woll. Only tho Kaiapoi Woolleiv Company had agreed to make- a display of manufactured clothing, etc. Mr Hercus said that if-it had not been for tho late fire-, his company would' have been very happy to provide a display for several shops. ■ ' The President read a letter from, the secretary of the Wellington Industrial Association, stating that Sir Joseph Wα rd had been asked to grant excursion fares on the railways during the week, and they were awaiting theanswer. . The Shopkeepers' Association in Wellington, he might say, were most enthusiastic in. the matter, and were urging all their members to make displays. POPULATION* STATISTICS. Mr Charters called attention to tho fact that Christehurch was placed fourth in tho list of the cities of the Dominion. Tourists tind visitors from England, and those i-a business, saw ib stated that all tlie cities -were more largely populated than Christehurch, and therefore businessee were establishod outside this city. It was most important that the population should ■be , correctly ttated. The latest Year Book ptit down the population of Auckland and suburbs, founded on the census'of 1906, at 82.101, and in the vital statistics for March, 1908. tho population was put down at 71,916; Christchureh and suburbs, exclusive of Sumner. in April, 1906, 67.878 - X including Sunnier, in March, 1008, 59,391: Wellington and suburbs, in 1006, 03,807. and' 1908. 70,947; Dimedin and suburb.;, in April," 190,6, 56,020, and in 1908, 59,495. According to these figures, Auckland had decreased 10,18.5. and Christehurch (including Sumner), 9608; Wellington had increased 7140, and Dunedm 3475. It seemed to him that it was a deliberate attempt to bokter up Wellington at the expense <if the other parts of the Dominion. He moved. "That the attention of the Christehurch members of the House be called to the apparent discrepancies between the latest rifcal statistics, as published by the and the censifs returns, with ■?. vieiv of -getting the icorrect ivopulation credited to each centre:'that the members of the House bo requested to obtain from the Reg-istrar-General a plan of each of the four centres, shewing what is'tho area eomprisvd within the various districts." Mr Hercus seconded tho motion, which was curried, ur.d it -was resolved to forward a copy to the Auckland lnd-ustnal Association.
