OVERCROWDED TRAMS.
TO THB EDITOR Off- "THE I'BESS." Sir,—The - other evening the train for Papanui, due in the Square at 0 p.m., arrived! fairly laden from tie Station. It left packed , with passengers, many standing, eaid several peir«ps desirous of boarding it were leil behind. Another presumably a "relief," was waiting empty at Baxnett's corner, biit this was waved by the inspector in tho direction of the "general siding," despite the fact thai he knew passengers wouldi be oompeiled to wait for the next service. Thris 13 a practice of daily occurrence, and is 1 rapidly becoming more frequent, and so long as the public tamely submit, will probably continue. Overcrowding is daungerous in many ways, and to stand in an overcrowdodi car and be compelled to inhale the expirations of others is not only unhealthy, but diiegusting, -and should not bo allowed. In "the majority of- civilized! erroununiiiee the Board would bo heavily fitted. for inviting accidents by overcrowding their vehicles, but we of Christemirch will still continue to .wonder at the spread of consumption' and other, infectious diseases what timo we await the completion of tho new cars and tho sanatorium on Casihmere Hißs. Yours, etc, PERCY H. V. HAMMERSLEY.
