SHIPPING NOTES. . The price offered by the TJnionr &beaan Ship Company, Ltd., for the ship DartfoTd. a understood to hay* been exceptionally high (pays the "Sydney Shipping List"), but when the ktst mail left Sydney the vessel's owners hud not replied to the cablegram sent them. The vessel baa been lying in Sydney harbowr since September 20th last. It is very probable (says a Sydney paper) that the recently inaugurated Swedish-Aus-tralian Line of steamers will borre a regular service to Now Zealand ports at no distant date. At present they are only running betveea Scandinavian parte, South Africa, and Australia, and have to tranship any cargo at either Sydney or Melbourne for New Zealand. Messrs Kinney, Barns and Co. are local agents for this lino of steamers. . The large fleet of vessels m pert at Melbourne last week included six four-masted barques. The four-masted barque Italia, 3030 tons, which arrived at Sydney last week for docking is one of the finest and Largest vessel* flyir-g tbe Italian flag that havo jot visited Australia. ~. ... . . A . . The "Svdiwy Shipping L»t" states that on December SOth. there were no fewer than 57 deep-sea vessel*—eteamera and sailers—in port at Sydney, in addition to a large, fleet cf regular inAcr-State vessel*. Tha steamer H&rbart, which visited Lyttelton a few weeks ago, arrived at Port Fine recently, and is loading 6000 tons of ors for Europe. Very few vessels were chartered to load

coal at Newcastle during the week ended December 2Sth. Newcastle harbour is crowded with vessels of all rigs just now. Tho barque Onyx baa been chartered to load hardwood at Hobart for Dunedin. The Shaw, Swill and Albion Compaey'a new steamer Kia Ora left Liverpool on Ihursday last for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers. Tha vessel is oo bar maiden trip, and is duo at Lytterton about February 26th. Thence ah* is timed to sail for London on the 15th of this month. Tho F.U.S. liner Fifeshire ia due her* tomorrow from Port Chalmers, and ia expected to sail on Saturday for Wellington. She will complete loading at that port, and will sail unally on the 18th inst. for Avoamouth, via Monte Video and Las Palmao. Messrs Mailier and Quereau,' ot New York, report that as regards freighting to New Zealand, there have been no changes recently. The cost of charters still continues high, and with very little sail tonnage offering, and owners' views as regards steamers being very firm, full rates have to be paid, and naturally the different lines are not inclined to reduce their freight rates.
