« . On Monday last the body of an oldi resident of Sou thbridge named Thomas Ford, was found in his room at th© old immigration barracks, in. a forward stato of decomposition. It appears that the man had not been seen alivo since the previous Tuesday, and'must have been dead some days. Constable O'Gonnell was at once summoned, and on arrival communicated with the Coroner at ChTistehurch, but as the deceased had frequently been attended by a doctor, it was found unnecessary to hold an inquest. Ford was a patient at the Christchurch Hospital for some time recently. The plucky action of a lad.named G. Penlington was the means of averting a drowning fatality at Akaroa on Saturday afternoon. Several boys were fishing at the end of the wharf, and one df them, named Thomas, fell (into the sea. He had sunk twice when Penlington jumped in> and held him up whilst a lady who had wrtoessed the accident ran for help. A boat was quickly on the spot, and the boys were picked up lit-tlo tne worse for their wetting. "While working at the erection of a house at Glenroy last Thursday, Mr Joseph Moffat had tho misfortune to break* his collarbone. Tho sufferer had to bo driven twenty miles to Darfield to obtain medical assurance. Mr Moffat will be incapacitated for about three weeks. A sudden death occurred on the train from Springfield yesterday morning, when Charles LejDrosse. cook at Benmoro station, expired whilst on his way to the Christchurch Hospital. He complained of internal pains on Tuesday, and was coming to town for treatment. The body was taken to the Morgue, where the inquest will be held.
