A CHARGE OF MURDER.

Inspector Cullen has received a telegram from Helensvillo, stating that William Stuart murdered Edward West, yesterday afternoon, at Kankapakapa. Stuart has been arrested. Later. Later details show that th© tragedy was the result of a gumdiggers' quarrel. William Stuart, a man about 60 years of age, killed Edward West, aged 45, by chopping him with an axe. Th© out, on the left side of the skull, was about 5 inches long and four inches deep. The. accused, in a statement to th© constable, said bo and West were in a whare. H© (Stuart) had an. ax© in his hand, chopping wood. West saw some gum in the whare. and saw: '•You ; you did not scrape all your gum." "In a moment I chopped him on tho head." added Stuart. "I *aw his ©yea opening and shutting, and I knew he was dead.'' The Latest, A slightly different account of tbe actual quarrel is given in a telegram sent to Inspector Cnllen by ChiefDetective Marsack, who states that th© version supplied to him was that Stuart was engaged in dropping wood and West was looking at pom© gum. Then West accused bim of stealing the gum, and kicked him. Then Stuart became enraged at the accusation, and at once rai«\l th© axe and struck West on the hwad,. killing him. - Accused will be brought before tho Helensvill© Police Court to-morrow, and charged with, mnrder.
