Sir John Madden, Chief Justice of Victoria, and Miss Madden, arrived at Wellington, by the Maraima, from Sydney yesterday, on-route for tho Hot Lakes district. They are accompanied by Cokaui Oaonpheß, who was AJD.C. to has Honour during the tame the latter was lieutenant-Governor of the State, Mr J. Keir Hardie, M.P., spent a busy .morning at Waitemata Lodge yesterday, and in the afternoon went for a drive round the suburbs. Ho intends leaving for the South to-day. .Colonel Cowan, R,E. (England), Colonel Hoptdn and Mr P. S. Macgill (Dnnedin) were recent callers at the local office of tho Tourist Departments Mr R. H. Burry. Mr W. iTFraser, and, Mrs Friodlander (Aahburtoa) ar© visitors to town. The, Mayor of Wellington called on tho Mayor of Christeburch, yesterday. Mr Arthur E G. Rhodes was a passenger for the Sooth by the second express yesterday. . Dr. Bradabanr arrived from theSouth by the fust express last evening. ,' Among the arrivals in town jester-day-were:—Messrs W. G. Aspimaii (Temul»)/ Geo. Kerr (Timaru), W. A, Fraser (Weffiagton), A. Hutchinson (Hastings), F. By Fiteroy (Hastings), A. K. Firth (England), W. T. Robinaon (Cheviot), J. A. Rohh (Dnnedin), T. MoHroy, junr. (Baltimore), and J. J. Carry (Blenheim). Messrs J. M. Haramersley, WymnWilliams, and W. Milne left lor Weilinetou by the Zealandia last nigh*. Messrs W. BroadhuTst and D. Shirlaw left for Auckland by the Zealandia last night. Mr F. Wajdegrave, ■Crndcr-Secretary for Justice,, and Mrs Waldegrave leave on January 17th/ by the Wimmera, on a trip to England. The Rev. C- Gordon-Biddle, vicar of St. John's Anglican Church, Leeston (accompanied by Mrs Riddle) leaves for Timaru to-day on his annual holiday. . At its meeting yesterday, the North Canterbury Education Board (on the motion of Dr. Hight) passed a resolution expressive of its high appreciation of ifhe sorviom rendered by Mr S. Bullock during his lengthy term of office as master of th© .FendaJton school, he harms; ,now tendered his resignation. A farewell social was tendered Dr. and Mrs Howard on the 26th ult. on tho occasion of their leaving tho Darfield district. Dr. Howard has been stationed at Darfield for about seven years, but has been obliged to roKntruish praotice for a tim© owing to illhealth. As a token of goodwill and esteem Dr. Howard was presented by the residente with an illuminated address and & puree of sovereigns.
