With the warm support of tho Duke of Aborcorn and Lord Londonderry, Lord Cuxzon, in a letter to the Irieh peers, agrees to stand for the vacancy in the House of Lords caused by Lord Kihneine'e death. He explains that the strain of work in India prevents him seeking a sent in the House of Commons, and adds that he is debarred from entering tho House of Lordt* by the ordinary channels by Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman's refusal to allow him to sit with all the other exviceroys of India in the Upper Chamber.
Tlie "Daily News" says the letter is amazing. If Lord Curzon did not" ask for an, English peerage, he has no grievance. If he did ask, he would hove done well to keep hie grievance to himself.
"The Times" considers that Lord Curzon's claims to c. sent in the House of Lords are too clear to need argument. When ho accepted the position of Viceroy of India his ambition wae to return to tho House of Commons, and in view of that intention an Irish peerage was conferred, instead of, us originally intended, « peerage of the United Kingdom. It would have been a graceful and becoming act on the part of Sir Henry Campboll-Bannw-man to accede to the natural and reasonable representations advanced in. favour of allowing Lord Curzon to sit in tho House ot Lords. "The Timce" trusts that the Irish peers will restore to public life this man of eminence whom Sir Henry Ganipbell-Bannerman shuts out.
Peers of the United Kingdom aro Peers of Parliament, and may not sit in the House of Commons, but only a portion, of the Scotch and Irish peers are members of tho House- of Lords. Irish peers not elected by their order may eit for any borough or county constituency in- Great Britain.
