THE KAIKOURA AGROUND.
MISHAP IN OTAGO HARBOUR. (special to "the pbess.") DUNEDIN, November 29* The New Zealand Shipping Company's Home cargo steamer Kaikoura, which arrived at the Heads yesterday afternoon, grounded in the new ohannel opposite the Kaik this morning while coming into the Lower Harbour. The mishap occurred about 9.35 a.m., and at mid-day the vessel wan still aground, although she had turned round with the ebb tide. Her bow is now pointing towards the Heads. She has 8000 tone of general cargo aboard, and is drawing 24ft 4in. The tides are very poor, a fact -which is probably the cause of the mishap. Captain Thomson, who wae at Port Chalmers when the vessel grounded, immediately proceeded to the Kaikoura in the tue Plucky. The combined effcrte of the tug and the Kaikoura's propellers, however, proved ineffectual, and it eeeme that nothing practicable can be effected until high water this evening.
Arrangements are being mado to lighten the vessel, and as she is aground on a soft sandy bottom, it is expected that she. will be floated off uninjured on this evening's tide. When the tide went out this afternoon it left her sitting- upright almost right noroe the ohannel. The Union Company's fiteam«r Talune was getting ready this afternoon to be towea dowa to the Kaikoura for lightering purpose*!. The Plucky brought up the mails and passengers.
