— Tlie telegraphed report. recßt'cd by. the Tourist Office- yesterday indicating the state of the rivers was a. follows: — Ashley, Selwyn nnd liOwer Ashburton, clear; Waimakariri, Upper Ashburton. and Rangitata, dirty; Opihi and Ashburton Mouth, fishable; Rakaia, slightly discoloured : Waitaki. good order. Mr A. LI. Shury, secretary of the Ashburton Acclimatisation .ScH'iety, yesterday informed a "Guardian" rejwiter that a rumour has gained currency that a syndicate is making preparations for netting trout in the Ashburton rivers for side purpose-.. In view of this, he had had a copy of tho new regulations of '"The Fisheries Conservation Act," referring to trout netting, sent to him. Those regulations woro gazetted oil October 24th, and se-tion 4 states that "No netting for any purposes Whatever shall be allowed vithii. a radius of half-a-mile seaward?, muu the mouth of auy river or -troam, whether such stream l*. flowing into the estuary or directly"to the -en." Then, again, says Mr" Shury, muting for trout this side of Oamaru i* illegal, as all the rivers are out of ,he_ southern netting area.
