Tho Council resumed at 8 p.m THE PUBLIC SERVICE. Dr. FINDLAY moved tho second reading of tho Public fciervice Classification Bill. Mr RIGG pointed out that the salaries of the clerk an dassistant clerk of the House of Representatives were to be increased, and something should bo done to incrca.se the salaries of the officers of the Legislative Council. Mr W. C. SMITH, said the highest position, that of Clerk of Parliaments, was held by an officer of tho Legislative Council, and carried £50 ks* than that of the clerk of the Lower House. Tho salaries of the officers of tho Council should bo increased as well as the honorarium of members. The ATrORNEY-GE'NERAL said the differences pointed out in tho salaries of the Legislative officers were new to him, and in order that he might consult his colleagues, he would move to report progress on the Bill when it reached the committeo stage. Tho second reading was agreed to. and progress was reported when the Bill was committed. FINAL STAGES. Tho following Bills were put through their final stages:—Fisheries Conservation Act Amendment, Post and Telegraph Classification, Otngo Presbyterian Church Property, Parliamentary and Executive Titles.. Taieri Land Drainage, Canterbury College Endowment, Education Act Amendment, Beer Duty, and Public Trust Offico Act Amendment. Tho Council rose at 9.15 p.m.
