PAYMENT OF TEACHERS.
(srECUL TO "THB PRESS.") WELLINGTON, November 13. In the House to-day the Minister of Education wae asked whether he will arrange that the staffing of schools and salaries of teachers be this yew arranged end paid on the basis of last year's average attendance, in oases whore the same has been seriously effected through tho prevalence of epidemics, such as whooping cough, measles and influence. The Minister of Education replied:—l will take the position into consideration when all the returns for the year are in the Department, and tho effect of the existing regulations has been ascertained. It is vDry unlikely, however, that with the provision in the regulations for substituting certain quarterly averages of the previous year, there will be any serious effect on the atafft and salaries for 1903. Mr Fowlde then entered into a long explanation of the present system; . (fbkh association tilkuum.l AUCKLAND, November 13. At a meeting of the Auckland Board of Education it was stated that 85 school? in the Auckland district were •eriouely affected by epidemics. In the pest two quartere the attendance:■«** several schools were effected to the extent of ovor ten per cent. Tho Board resolved to •—urge the Minister, of Education., to a.tnbnd tho regulations to enable the average attendance for 1006 to be substituted for that of 1907 in, schools affected by epidemics.
