The hope wae expressed that a regulation proridmg for the substitution of a quarter or a nfjf-jear of last yeare attendance would enable tie Board to retain the •ervioce of the teachers concerned. The action of the committee wae »n----proved. . xt^*^ 8 *! I, !**"* ,^,', ****" , from the Canterbury Educational laetitute was read asking the Board, in view of the epidemics which have been prevalent, to urge the Minister to substitute the average of 190G for thin year's average. J£r T. W. Bowe eaid he had great sympathy with the teachers in thie matter", and coneidored that they proposed a vory fair way out of the difficulty. In many oases thero were decreases of from 6 to 8 par cent., and the Board was faoed with the proapeot of dismissing a number of valuable teachers through no fault of tuoh teachers. The Department would be perfectly warranted in substituting the 1906 average. Bβ moved in the direction of giving effect to the Institute* request. Mr John Jamieson eeconded the motion, and eaid that unless the proposal was adopted it would be a set-back to the Board's young male teachers. They had difficulty in getting such teaohexs, and unices something of the character •uggested Waa done, their difficulties would be increased. The Chairman (Mr M. DalzieJ) eaid he was quite in sympathy with the motion. He hoped the time would come when teachers would not be paid according to attendance. The motion was agreed to.
