ITALIAN RESCUE HOMES.

TO TIIE IDITOB OF "THI r*E9S." Sir,—My attention ha* jtwt been called to a statement recently made in the columns of one of the Christchurch newspapers:—'Throughout the whole of Italy there is not one. Rescue Home for poor unfortunate girle." Aβ this assertion ie wholly at variance with facts. I beig to be allowed to say that I myself visited two excellent Reecuo Homes in Rome, conducted by the Sistors of tho Good Shepherd—the seme order whose listers ore doing β-uoh noble work at Mount Magdala. I can also vouch for the fact that one or more eimilar "Homes" are to be found in nearly all the large and in some of the smaller cities of Italy. I have eeen these in Turin, Florence, Milan. Naples and Pompeii. I am sure, sir, thet you would not knowingly countenance the propagation of an untruthful assertion, nor wish it to go forth unchallenged Youre, etc., „ x . t J. J. GRIMES, Catholic Bwhop of ChrUtchurch. rsorember 11-th. THE PRICE OF FRUIT. TO THE EDITOR OF "THE I'RESS. - ' Sir.—What with th€» increase of the necessaries of life, ono is at their wits'

end to know what to place upon the table ha a substitute for those thincs that are becoming prohibitive. Atone time the housekeeper could procure a caso of bananas, which is a good staple food, at the saleroom at a reasonable rate. Just now, when they would bo appreciated ns an aid to the housekeeper, strange to say they have risen nlso. It cannot be from a scarcity, as there is abundance in tho market. The fruiterer'e prior , remains the same, although dearer at the saleroom. Can it be that there is a ring or combine in the trade. A few shillings worth would bo of no ufce where there are largo families; hence the reason why the price should be co regulated to mnke thorn obtainable. If fniit were cheaper, more of it would be consumed, nnd it would not be regarded as a luxury as is the case at present. It is quite time the people's cause was taken up and a municipal market established. If any reference is made to the price of fruit, those in the trade invariably refer to their rente. I think that all sectione of the community should •be regarded, not only a few, which is tlie case when one cannot get the necessaries of life. —Yours, et»\, HOUSEKEEPER. Christcliurch, November 9th.
