SUMNER WATER SUPPLY.
THE UNDERWRITERS' ENQUIRY. A letter was received by tlie Sumncr Borough Council last night from the secretary of the Underwriters , Association (Mr H. Antill Adley), stating that the Association's attention.had been called to the alleged unsatisfactory state of the-water supply on the occasion of a fire at Mr Mackenzie's, Dryden street, about a fortnight ago. The Association's Committee understood that there was no water available, and that the brigade could do v nothing but watch the building burn. The Mayor stated that, as the matter was urgent, he had replied that the Council had no knowledge of the fire mentioned, but about that date a builder's tool-#hed in course of erection in Dryden street was destroyed Jjy fire. The alarm was given at 1.10 "a.m., and the ■ brigade turned out! smartly, but as the place was destroyed before the alarm was given, the brigade could not possibly render any service. At the time of <the fire there was c reserve supply of about forty, thousand gallons in the reservoir. If the Association would oare to have a first-hand knowledge of the ptate of the Sumner water supply and the efficiency of the brigade, the Council would be pleased to arrange for a surprise "turnout" at any time it would suit tJieir representatives to vieit Sumner. The Mayor added that it was astonishing the way in which these reports reached the Association, and almost invariably when these chargce were made there was an ample supply of water. The Mayor's action was approved.
