The Premier, Mr Bent, is inclined to bring in a Bill to assist charities by taxing football matches, theatres, and race meetings. MAGNESITE DEPOSIT. An immense deposit of magnesito has been discovered at Fifield. Tho University authorities expatiate on tho value of the deposit in the manufacture of fire bricks and furnace linings.
A MAGNIFICENT OFFER. MELBOURNE, September 10. Thb trustees of the late Mr Edward Wilson, of the "Argus," have offered the committee of the Melbourne Hospital £100,000 to build a new hospital.
PRISONERS' RESENTMENT. A number of prisoners were left alone for a few minutes in a flax room. When the warder returned ho found the room on fire. The prisoners willingly assisted to subdue the flames, but the flax-making machinery was destroyed. It is believed that the prisoners caused tho fire through resentment at being made to work at such a profitable industry without remuneration.
A TERRIFIC HURRICANE. FREMANTLE, September 10. The steamer Tokomaru, bound from Por*. Pirio to Durban, put in here for repairs. She encountered a terrific hurricane and lost 2u feet of bulwarks. Tho lifeboat was smashed, and it is feared a number of plates are strained.
