Thci weather con:iitions were favourable for tin- o'tetions. The day was liiK> and bsijiiit 111 the nietroiwlitan aicas. 1 i^ , afierncon was <.ieclare-U a pubii- !!•■>'Ul;;y. IJio liquor and no-licenso interests vied with each other iv activity in securing supporters.
(Hi-ceivod fcc-i>t<;mber 11th, 12.30 a.m.) 'J ho returns arc roming in slowly. A few cay and wiburoau ii«ures are couipleto. As predicted, tlio returns have produced some surprises. Of the ALinistors, Air Carruthers, .Mr Hogue, «nd Air Wade were re-dectod by large majorities; also Air AlcGowan, tho labour leader. At Darling Harbour, Air John .Norton, Independent, roplaies Air Daley, Labour. In the Piulhp Electorate Air Dick Aleagher, ludependent, replaces Air Sullivan, Labour, i'or Vi'averley, Air Onflow, Independent, was olocted iv place of Air J'j.«ep, ; til. Leonard?, another Ministerial iSeat, was lost to Air Clark. Indepondont labour gained a couplo of seats at Bahuain and llozolle, defeating Ministerialists 111 both instances. At Surrey Ililla Air Crick -wooed tho electors with -three other candidates, but had to bo content with third place; Air Graham, Alinistoiiaiist, winning tho seat. Air Parkes, Independent, was selected in place of a Aiiuieterialist at Canterbury, and Air Dacey, I*abour, wtis ousted by Air Bruntucel, Ministerialist and secretary of tho .New South Wales Alliance., ut Alexandria. Labour gained Leichardt and Canipcrdown at tho Government's expense, and Uotaiiy also went to Labour.
At Wickhani, Mr Graham, Labour, vr-on tho seat fiom Jir Fegau, the -Ministerialist. All members of the Ministry are believed to bo safe. Practically the whole of the country returns are incomplete.
Tho feature of tho election so far is tho success of Labour and the Independents in the Metropolitan areas. The incomplete returns indicate mat tho Government is holding its position in tho country.
The Aletropolitan area returned 18 Aliuisteriaiists, 10 Labour, and 6 Independent.
Including tho country electorates, where tho returns fairly well indicate wbich candidates will win, tho latest figures are:—-Ministerialists 22, Labour 16, Independent 6.
It is improbable that the local option poll will be availabe for a day or two, but tho no-liccnso party claim that tho majority of the electorates will be found to have voted for reduction, and a few for no-liceutso. Tho poll on tho liquor question is admittedly very hoary.
