A CONVICTION QUASHED

According to a telegram received from i missionary in the Congo Free State, the Conrt of Appeal at Boma quashed the conviction of the Rev. Ed*ar" Stannard, for libelling Major Bae&trom, Belgian Police Commandant at Bassankusa, in connection with hie treatment of the natives. The Rev. E. Btannard woe i»nvicted in July, 1906, and ordered to pay a fine of 1000 francs.
The Stannard case caused great indignation in England. Mr Stannard gave evidence before the Cororniasion which enquired into tho allegations of ertfelty to tho natives, and in spite of the fact that the Commission's report wae unfavourable to Major Hagstrom, an action for libel wee based on statements made by Mr Stannard in evidence. ,
