A NAUTICAL ENQUIRY;
THE TAVIUNI-PENDLE HILL COLLISION.
(press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, July G. A nautical enquiry into the collision between tho Taviuni and tho Pendlv Hill commenced to-day. D. Mc Arthur, rnato of tho Pendle Hill, stated that his vessel was riding -at anchor on a calm, clear moonlight night. The Taviuni, which woe coming up 'he niidchinnel, canto in at an angle, And eiiddenly st<.>ered across the bowe, carrying away tho jibboom. C«j)tdin liin/ba> of tho Taviuni, came aboard 'ater. in reply to a question ac to whit ww, wrong with him, hie second oHker i?aid Captain Lindsay suffered from dyeentery all the Wfly from the Islands, and had been taking chlorodyne. Cuptain Lindsay stated in Court tbet ho did not blame tho barque in any way. The collision was duo to an error of judgment on his pirt. Tho officers end crew of the Pendlo Hill were accordingly released from attendance. Captain Lindsay was placed in the witncßs box, but owing to hie being ill, his evidence was postponed. The enquiry was adjourned till Saturday, when the Taviuni will return from Wcstport.
