After a trial lasting many days, Carlos Waddington, son of the Chilian Charge d'Affaires at Brussels, was acquitted on a charge of killing Ernest Balmaceda, nephew of the late President of Chili, on February 24th, 1906. Tho evidence showed that Balmaceda, after seducing Waddington's sistei , refused to fulfil his promise of marriage, and threatened to create a terrible scandal in Chili.

A remorkable scene occurred in Court at the close of the trial. Men cheered, and women embraced Waddingion.
