CANTERBURY ELECTRICAL WORKERS' UNION.

« The following is a copy of the proposed statement of hours and conditions of labour of the Canterbury Electrical Workers' Industrial Union, which is to be submitted to the employers. Between August Ist and April 30th the houns shall be 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 0 p.m., while between May Ist and July 31st from 8 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., with half an hour for lunch shall constitute a day's labour. On Saturdays the employees will work till 12 noon. All men employed as •wiremen, for electrio ": holla, tele, phones, fire and burglar alarms; also switch-board attendants and electrical fitters, who are engaged either in the erection, manufacture ot repair of electrical machinery and appliances, shall be paid not leas than twelve shilling? and sixpence (12s 6d) per day. ,The following conditions and wages shall appJy to apprentices:—(a) All apprentices shall be legally indentured for a term of five (o) commencing not later than tihe age of sixteen (16), They may serve two (2) months' probation, and if accepted, this time shall bo counted in indenture. (b) The wages shall be:-r-Ten shillings per wee-k for the first year, fifteen shillings tho second, twenty-five shilftnga for the third, thirty-five shilling for the fourth, and forty-five shillings for the fifth. (c) Tbe proportion of apprentices to journeymen shell not exceed ono to three or friction of the first throe. All workmen and apprentices engaged in the erection or repair of accumulator battery work shall be paid an extra amount of two shillings and sixpence (2s 6d) per day. All workmen and apprentices sent to country work shall be conveyed or have their travelling expenses paid to and from, and have their time paid at the ordinary rate both going to and returning from such work. All time worked beyond the hours mentioned above shall be considered overtime, and shall bo paid for at the rate of timo-and-a-quarter for the first two hours, time-and-a-half for the next two hours, and double time for all time worked till 8 a.m. on the following morning, and for each of the following days:—New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day. King's Birthday, Anniversary Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and Sundays. Preference to unionists is asked for. When tho work is elsewhere than at the business premises of the employer, and is distant more than one mile from the said business premises, the workman 6hall be paid at the ordinary rate for the time reasonably occupied in walking to and from such work, provided Ire shall not he paid for tlie first milo from the said business premises. When the work is -moro than three (3) miles from the said busings premise, tho employer &hall allow train or tram fares and timo travelling to and from such work. An employment book with names and addresses of union members who aro j unemployed shall bo kept for inspection in a convenient place. !
