LEAGUE OP WHEELMEN
The Council of the. League of New Zealand Wheelmen met last night. Present—Messrs A C. Duff (presiding). A. It. Barker, T. H. Smith, and D. E. Wood.
The secretary announced that the bank balance totalled £IG2 8s lOd.
The secretary of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society wrote protesting against tlie League holding their Championship Meeting on January 2nd. which had been set apart for tliis Society's annuel sports meeting. The Chairman stated that January 2nd was the only date available. Mr G. Sutherland wrote asking tho Council to after tho date, a.s he was under engagement to compete at the Timaru Caledonian Sports. Mr Smith did not think that the. championship ridei-s could be obtained on January* 2nd, for they would Ik> riding elsewhere. The meeting. "s*> believed, would be more surer.ssfu) if he'd on a Saturday. He moved that the sub-committee should W asked to arrange for a suitable date after January 2nd.
The motion was Mrconded by Mr Barker and carri'd.
The Centaur Club (Pal mere ton North) and Eden da ie Club wore stiuck off the list as defunct.
The Pioneer Bicycle I tub wrote withdrawing from the Loavjue.
The Adams iSutr Cycle Company wrote asking whether the dispute between the Dunlop Rublier Company and the writers had lieon re J', vrcd to tho Council of the League of Now Zealand Wheelmen, and who i her the srcivtary of tho League had acte-d in- the matter in his official capacity - . Tho secretary vtatod that he had given a reply that neither the Council nor himself had taken any ,art in the dispute between the companies. The Cheviot Cycling Club was affiliated.
Mr H. Bowloy wrote etating that as there was not very much incentive to stay in the amateur ranks for the coming season, ho was compelled to apply for inclusion in the cash ranks-. He had understood last mmisoii tint the Leaguo was gi>ing to the various clubs to cater tno:e for the amateur cyclist, but the very fact of the Christchurch Cycling CI lib omitting amateur races from their Exhibition Meeting meant the death knell to true sport for cycling in Scvr Zealand. As holder of the Rudge-Whitworth Cup. ho asked ■u J hat the League intended to do with the trophy, as amateur cycling was practically dead. Mr Barker said that tho Cycling Club could not be expected to put on events which would be competed for by only about half a. dozen riders, when they could get largo entries for large events. It was resolved to hold the application over until certain formalities had been complied with. The Chairman said it was proposed thxt the League should, immediately after the Dunlop Road Race,, take into consideration the question of controlling road races. The Dunlop Company and the Adams Star Company, who proposed holding road races during the Exhibition, had agreed to accept only riders registered with tho League. The matter was left in the hands of a special committee.
