THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF COMMITTEES.

(SPECIAL VO "THE PBESS.") DUNEDIX, August 13. In an address last night, Mr A. R. Barclay, M.H.R., speaking of tho Chairmanship of Committees of the House of Representatives, said:—"The man who has the best right to that petition is Mr Tanuer, of Avon, from his experience and length of service, if iSir William Steward is not likely to be a candidate. Other names mentioned ere thowe of Mr 'Wilford and Mr George Latirenson. It seems impossible' to believe that tho latter gentleman can really be seriously thought of by tho Government. Ho is perhaps best known in Dunedin as one of those members who mado so savage and bitter an attack on Mr Seddon last year. His most remarkable appoaranco in Dunodin was on tho stage of the Garrison Hall on the celebrated occasion when the occupants df the platform were perforce compelled to deliver their orations solely to the oars of the attendant reporters, but Mr Lauraison seems to have, a pretty taste in chaste and elegant language. Hβ is reported to havo stated at A\ oolston when speaking of this meeting, that '<m taking tho platform he, and his friend were faced by 3500 howling, hairy-toothed, burgoo jammers, , and this is the gentleman who is now supposed to bo supported by thd Government for the position of Chairman of Committees. Mr Wilford is a gentleman of ability, and doubtless would manage fairly well, but Mr Tanner is very much hie .senior in every way. ,.
