INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION.
QUARTERLY MEETING.. > At the quarterly meeting of the Canterbury Industrial Association lost evening, Mr W. W. Chapters presiding, Mr Frostick was re-elected to represent the Association on. the directorate of the Canterbury Hall Company. Messrs Booth, Beswick, and Frostick, with tho president, were appointed to represent the Association in connection, nvith the proposed joint re-presea-tatioms to tho Government regarding * the Christchurch-Lyttelton railway rates. Following a reference to tfho canal scheme in the chairman's quarterly statement Mr Scott moved:—"That this Association is extremely disappointed at the action of the Lyttelton Harbour Board at its last meeting in the matter of tho Chris'tchurch-Sunincr ship canal, as caleu'lated to delay the procuring of information the publio are desirous of obtaining as to the feasibleness and' cost of the scheme, and urges tihe Board to take immediate steps to ive-ce-isidar its decision." This was seconded by Mr Frostick and carried.
Tlie sub-committee set ,up in, 00-mneo-tion with forest preservation submitted the following resolutions, whicli were adopted:—"That in view of the rapid disappearance of our forests, it is.tlie opinion o'i this ootmniit'tee that the Government, should seriously consider the question' of conLservimg remaining supplies of native timber suitable lor indaistoial purposes, suoh as kauri, rod - pine, a__d white - pine, by imposing an export duty and by making regulations roga.rdiiig tho falling of timber in public amd native lands to prevent needless destruction; its, for intitanoo, prohibiting tho falling of trees under a. certain specified size, cutting at more than specified size above the ground level, and providing for (supervision of milling operations by qualified officers." (2) "That in order to provide for effective regulation and supervision as per foregoing resolution, aud to stimulate publio interest by disseminating information and encouraging the planting of suitable forest trees. a separate Forestry Department should bo established, with onicers and resident officers to each provincial district." (3) "That the Government be asked to have a careful survey made of our re-m-uning forest lands, with a view to setting aside oJ*d reserving absolutely for forestry purposes euch lands as are unsuitable for wettloment owing to poverty of soil, precipitous surface, or other causes." (4) "That Mr Matthews, Chief Forester, be invited to deliver - a public lecture uawlar tho auspices, of this Association on the subject of .Forest and Forestation." i Messrs Scott, Booth, Peppier, Fnostick and Cooper wero appointed a committee to take into consideration tho offect of trusts on New Zealand industries, and the question of renewing the Association's temporary measure dealing with the question in a better form. • A fuller report is held over.
