ALIEN CONTRACT LABOUR.
HOUSE OF LORDS REJECTS A LABOUR BILL.
(Received May 18th, 11.20 p.m.) LONDON, May 18. ■ The Houeo of, by 96 to 24, rejected the second reading of the Labour Party's Bill preventing the importation of aliens under contract during Jabpur disputes. The Bill parsed the House of Commons without opposition.
Viecount Ridley declared that the Bill benefited trade unions at the very moment when the Govornment was conferring on them unlimited power* under the Trade Disputes Bill, placing tnem above the law of the land.
Lord lieauchamp said that the Government propc6ed to treat the Bill exactly as they did in the House of Commons. They did not propose to take one side or the other, but would leave the decision to the House.
Lord Londonderry declared »vat he was not surprised at the attitude of "Leave it to you," adopted by tue Government.
Tho Marquis of Ripon declared ma« the Bill was a consistent addition to the Aliens Act.
Lord Lansdowne said that <the promoters were proposing to further load their dice, but if the Government would aesume α-esponsibiwty for the Bill, and would see it amended and made workable in commute*, he would support the second reading.
Lord Salisbury declared that the Government's action was a parody of legislation.
