ARBOR DAY CELEBRATIONS.

A meeting of the Arbor Day Coroirritt©' was held in tho Gloucester street Chambers last evening. Mr J. Jamieson occupied tho chair. The North Canterbury Education, Board wrote approving of the tree-?<L:t.ii-ti:np; isohoino. and forwarding a cheque for £10. The Beard also granted their patronage to tho concert to be held in the Choral Hall on May 21th. The Selwyn County Council forwarded a cheque, far £5. With regard to the tree-planting on the hills on Arbor Day, Mr W. Smith, secretary of the explained tlutt it would be in pursuance of last yeare operations if the planting was carried out further up the hill, and the publ o would think thoy were doing a great deal more good if they continued to plant further afield hiatead of plancing more trow> in between thaw alre;tdy set. Mr H. G. Ell, M.H.R., was in accord with the last speaker's views, and thought they sbculd continue to plant along the Governors Bay road right up to the top of the hill. Mr Spill.T, as one of the deputation who had viewed tho place, explained why they had recommended planting between the, treoi put in last Arbor Day. iv answer to a question as to the best trees to plant, Dr. Cockayne thought that cabbage tre*. planted in groups looked as well as auy. Mr Smith moved that, as previously arranged, tho trees this year bo plant«vfl between Victoria Park and Dyer's I'ass. Tlk> motion was carried. •>lr J. Joyce was engaged to supervi#*> the ivork of erecting the stakes and digging the holes. it wii3 decided that the children leave the Square at 10 o'clock. It was stated that owing to tho .innual examinations, the Wont Christchurch School u'ouH bn unabJe to take pait in the celebrations. Mr Smith said that some time ago they were <rivt\n to understand that theWoolston School was going to take part, but for somo unaccountable reason tho tickets had bo*m returned. The matter was k>ft in Mr Smith's hands to deal with. Mr Ell was appointed hon. curator, and tho list of trooe proposed to be planted was left with him for revision.
