DEAD ESTIMATED AT FIVE THOUSAND.
(Received April 20th, 11.14 p._.) NEW YORK, April 20. The Merchants' Exchange, Mrs Stanford's residence, and the famous Mark Hopkins Institute were burnt. Some pictures were saved from the Institute; A hundred thousand people passed Wednesday night in tihe park's, and on Thursday nigh* the number was probably 300,000. I'll© want of food and water is causing suffemintg. Thousands are wailting while the e_liers distribute water. Tlie rich have been prevented from buying food in largo quantities. Ths shocks on Wednesday caused heavy mortality at Santba Cruz, Palo Aito (near which was the celebrated Leland Stanford University), Napa City, Monterey, Gilroy- and Hallister. Spreckels's sugar factory at Salinas was des-broyed. Tho employees of tho Mint at San Francisco, by desperate efforts, saved the buildings, tdhioh cau__ined 00,000,000 dollars. The American Pacific squadron is safe at Long Beach. The people are still in a half-dazed state, but aro remarkably calm. A famine is feared, since the city hae never had more than throe days' supplies at a time. Prices hove trebled. Two shocks were felt at Los Ange.es on Thursday afternoon. Tho operator at the telegmaph station telegraphed:— "Office rocking like boat " and then th© message ceased. President Roosevelt has appealed for private contributions to the relief fundi?. The financiers at Wall street have sruspend'ed bii:-iness so as to ar__ge measures of relief. Mr J. D. Rockefeller has given 100,000 dollars to the relief fund, and other enormous contiribirtions have been rec?ived. The railways are conveying 'supplies free of charge. General Funston telegraphed at four this afternoon that there was no change in the progress of the fire. A private telegram received two hours later stated that the fire was spreading over the orest of Nob Hill in a northerly direction, towards the Latin Quarter. Th© latest estimates put the deaths (Joivn at 5000, and the damage at 300,000,000 dollars. The National Federation of the Churches request all denominations to observe Sunday next as a day of special intercession for the sufferers.
