Tlie Grand Opera House and Claus Sprecklcs's office, the finest building of its kind in the West, were crushed like an egg-shell by the earthquake. The Western Union Telegraph Office was wrecked. Many millionaires' mansions were burnt. Professor Milne, seismic expert, of the Isle of Wight, suggest- that tho earthquako was possibly caused by the earth swinging a little off its axis, j the strain, of th© struggle to get back breaking th© earth's crust.
