THE DEATH 1 ROLL ESTIMATED AT THOUSANDS.
• PEOPLE DUMBFOUNDED AND ' INCOHERENT. (Received April 20th, 12.23 a.m.) LONDON, April 19. General Funston, tlie Officer Oommanding at San Francisco, has practically established martial law there. The Federal authorities have been advised, through Chicago, that the death roll numbers thousands. Another estimate places the number of killed at 2500. It is reported that the suburb of Berkeley has been destroyed. This suburb contained the buildings of the University of California and other State institutions. Eye-witnesses of the earthquake state that the streets bulged and waved as if vthey were about to crack. The people have been dumbfounded and incoherent at the terrible disaster which has befallen them. They have threatened to shoot interviewers who pester them. A report states that the* American Pacific squadron was sunk while anchored in the bay, but ibis report is apparently baseless. Communication with San Francisco for c long time was limited to one wire. It u> feared that many journalists have been killed through the collapse of the ten-storeyed buildings of the " Examiner " and thte " Call."
