Tho sea overflowed between Bui«an Hay and Benicia, and a mile and a ha IF of the track of the Southern Pacific Railway disappeared under water. A crowded pas-senger train barely escaped the rush of water. The Cathedral of St. Ignaoe was burnt.

Leland Stamford University was j practically demolished. There was much loss of life and damage to property at Santa Rcsa, sixtyseven miloe south-<yest of Sacramento. Salbinae, eighty-«?von miles K>utheast of San Francisco, suffered considerably. The earthquake was severely felt in Nevada, and in Fresno City, 163 miles t*>uth-onst or San Francisco. Th<» trlograph companies have been forced to opon their offioes at Oakland. Half 'an. inch's movement by the earth's surface was recorded in the Washington instruments. Tho shocks were not felt southward of Santa Barbara some 250 miles to the south of San Francisco, on the coast. Lato New York telegrams state that even allowing for hysterical reports, it is apparent that the situation in San Francisco is becoming desperate. The fires are burning furiously in all quarters. Two rcgimenis of regulars are guarding property worth millions wihjch has been placed in the streets for safety from the flames. i The Mayor has appointed a committee of public safety and ordered the bakeries and the milk shops to supply the homeless. Eighty of the insurance companies havo resolved not to discriminate between the fire and the earthquake in paying losses. Tho Conned Opera Company lost all their scenery and personal luggage. Many of the inmates of the asylum at San Josw. 42 miles from San Francisco, were burned in the ruite of the building. ,;
