The town clerk's annual report shows that the capital value of Sydney properties for rating purposes is £45,545,000, which is an increase of £646,000 on the preceding year. Tho death-rate for the city is the lowest for eight years. AUSTRALIAN INVESTMENTS IN LONDON. The Hon. J. Oarruthers, Premier of New South Wales, states that while a very large amount of Australian money has gone to London for investment, it has not been done suddenly. The money has been sent pending tho obtaining of better securities here. WOMEN SHOPLIFTERS. MELBOURNE. April 18. A gang of women have been carrying out systematic shop-lifting for somo time past, and goods have been stolen to the extent of twenty or thirty pounds' worth per day. Two arrests have been made. PILOTS PECULIAR PREDICAMENT. ADELAIDE, April 18. Captain Pearson, a North Sea and English Channel pilot, had to be brought on here in the barque Genista. A terrific gale prevented him from being landed in England. HOT WEATHER. (Received April 19th t 12.13 a:m.) SYDNEY,, April 18. The weather is very sultry to-day, being the hottest April day experienced for seventeen years. The thermometer registered 88deg. in tho shad© in Sydney and ranged as high as 104deg. in the country. Heavy gales are predicted on the coast and between Bass Straits and New Zealand.
