SWIMMING.

The official opening of the new bath recently completed for the Papanui School took place on Saturday afternoon iv tho presence of several hundred spectators. The chairman, of tlie Bath Committee, Mr T. H. Caverhill, very briefly thanked all those who had 6o ably assifitod in supplying a long-felt want iv tho school district, and a,!«) to those who had given much time in erecting the substantial fence and drossing-roome. Tho cost of the bath to tho present had been £293, and a further sum of £60 was required to complete- the .ivork, and he urged on those present to afeiet the Ladiee , Committee at -the forthcoming bazaar to raise the required amount. Mr CaverhiH, in declaring tho bath open, took a header and swam two lengths amidst •cheers. Tho programme was a well-arranged one, and was carried out by the officials of tho Canterbury Centre, assisted by the Papemui Bath Committee. Tho entries were very good, the InterGlub Handicap having an entry of 64 and the Relay Race 20 teams, while the Obstacle and ,Divo claimed 12 and 16 e-ntriee respectively. Tho final distance of tho Schcolboys , Championship was ewum. W. Manhire, of the Addington School, won, and takes the gold medal presented by the Council of the N.Z.A.S.A. with 9 points, R. E. Dodge (Broadfielde) being eeoond with 6 points. The competition for the Harris Cup Squadron Race, 250 yds, for five man, produced one of the best contests yet scon, and East Christchurch just retained the cup by defeating Sydenham by a yard after the latter leading for over 230 yards. The time, 2min 44sec. was very good, being a shade under 33scc per mam The following are tho resulte:—

Th:e was a splendid race, and Sydenham looked liko winning up to the Jast 25 yards, ■n-hen Bullivant, swimming very gamely, won by a yard amidst great cheering from Sydenham. Time, 2min 44sec. Subscribers' Race, 50ydB —First beat: L. Matron, 7sec r 1; Manson, &ec, 2. Time, 4osec. Second heat: J. Townshend, B=ec. 1; W. Hopkins, Dsec, 2. Time, Uscc. Third heat: F. Chester, 75ec, 1] N. Hopkins, Bscc. 2. Tune, 42 l-sth e?c. Final: F. Chester, 1; Town&hend, 2. A good race. Won on the tench. Time, 44 2-sth sec.

Schoolboys' Championship of Canterbury—Final distance, 75yds: W. Manhire, Addington School, 1; 0. Oiliver, Lyttelton, 2. Manhire wins the ctiampfonship with three firftte, 9 points; Dodge, Broadfielde, silver medal, witli one first, one second, and one third, 6 points. Papanui Handicap (Inter-Club), semi-finale—First heat: L. Dingie won on the touch. Time, 33sec. Second heat: E. Percival 1. "Won by o> few inches. Time, 36eec. Third heat: W. Menzies 1. AVon by a foot. Time, 3&?ec. Fourth heat: J. Apployard 1. Won by a yard. Time, final: W". Menzies 1, L. Dingle 2. Percival and Appleyard also started. This wns a good race, Menzies winning by a bare touch from Dingle, with Percival and Applevard a few inches away third. Time, v 36 2-sth see. Obstacle Race—L. A. Shand 1.-Twelve started.

Springboard Dive—H. E. Sherwood 1. Sixteen competed. Relay Race—Final: Richmond Xo. 2 (L. Dingle, E. Allen, "W. Spratt and H. Yardley), 1; Yaldhurst, 2. "Won on the touch, Richmond No. 1 being a foot ■away third, Sydenham close up. The competition in this race was exceptionally good, no J«*s than twenty teams competing. Afternoon tea was provided for the

visitors and competitors, and hearty cheers were given by the visiting swimmere.

The annual race, between the Old Boys of the Boys' High School took place in "the school bath last Thuredav evenin", when there wes a good entry- LA. Shand won the first heat, time 36eec, O Ballin the second heat in 43; ec, E. Eldridge the third heat in 37sec. A Nicoll and T. Sinclair ewam a dead heat in the fourth heat in 3£te?c. lhs final -wae a good co, and L. A. Srand won by a yard. the others in a line. Mr Walter Johnson acted as starter and handicappor, and Messrs Bc-van-Bron-ii and Lawrence as judges. Mr BevanBrown presented Shand with the trophy, and in doing «> thanked Mr .Johnson for hip services on fic.reral ocoasions in connection with this annual fixture.
