OBITUARY.
MR O. NAPIER-DELL.
'.. Many people will regret to hear of th* death, of Mr 0.. Napier-Bell, who wafer, a. number of years etrnfoMing engineer to the Lytteiton Harbour Board. The deceased gentleman died at Derby, Tasmania. He served as a pupil under Messrs Bell and Miller, hydraulio engineers, Glasgow, during that time undertaking surveys for the Fishery Commission on the Iby; trigonometrical surveys in Skye and Inverness, and inspector over the construction of new streets and sewers in Edinburgh. He was employed on. the construction of * graving dock at Glasgow, and on surveys and plana for patent slips. From 1876 to ieS3 Mr Bell acted as engineer to the Ohristohuroh Drainage Board, and many of the works were carried out under his supervision. From 1878 to 1885 he w_s" engineer to the Lytteiton Harbour Board, and "designed and constructed the graving dock and patent slip, wharrea, jetties, and buildings. He was also consulting engineer for'the Wellington sewage works. and third valuer for the New Zealand Qovernment of railway;' stock in the South Island. He reported on the construction of the breakwater at Napier, making a surrey and general design. He also prepared an estimate (or tne future extension and ' improvement of the Wellington harbour, _s required by the Harbour Board, including a graving dock and slip. Between 1885-93 he was engineer to the Westport Harbour Board, and was Chief Resident Engineer for the New Zealand Midland Railway from East to West coast. He also, in those years, reported on works at Pt. Stanley, Macquarrie, Westport, Dunedin, and on the shingle drift at Timaru. From 1893 to 1897 he reported on the damage sustained by the Napier' Breakwater, and supplied olans to improve -ho proposed entrance. He was Inspector of Rolling Stock auO Vermanent Way. From 1898 to 1002 Mr Bell prepared designs and estimates for various works in Australasia, inoluduiE Brisbane, Hobart, East Bay Neck <Ship was one of the Royal Commission to report on the outer baibour at Adelaide. He has been connected with various places in the colony and Australia, where he has made many friends, and will be deeply mourned by a large circle of friends.
