THE NO-LICENSE MEETING.

«. TO THK EDITOE O* , "THE PBESS." Sir, —I write, not to enter into a controversy as to the gain or loss mad© by the No-liceneo party at the recent poll, but to correct a misapprehension , on your part, due perhaps to my want of clearness or to misunderstanding on tho part of your reporter. You refer to mc as saying that -'the ' No-licen6o party could not have polled , another fifty votes in Christchurch," i and you draw, conclusions perfectly justifiable if I had made that statement. but not wan-anted by tho statement I •which I really did make, viz., that "the ' License party could not have polled an- j other fifty votes in, Christchurch." It | would not be wise to discuss at any length tho relative excellence of tho : organisation of each party, but it is right that it should bo known that the costly organisation of tho Trade was not I possible to tho No-licence- party. ! I cannot refrain from suggesting that j if, as you say, "it will bo to tho in- j terc6t of tho Trade to show that they , have justified what amounts to a.vote j of couiidonoe," it would certainly be : to tho interest of this city, and no more than the obvious duty of such a paper as your own, to at least call at- j tention to the lamentable beginning the j Trade has made in this direction. Thirty-two'convictions in eight days in Christenurch alone, and at least fourteen of those fu*t offenders, all due to tho Trade, should surely bo fit food for reflection and matter for editorial comment._l am, etc., r g [We rcgrefc that we must plead guilty to misapprehension of a statement which on second reading was quite clear.—Ed. "The Pr«*."3
