Th* morning broke beautifully fine, and tbe air being dry and crisp, there could be no doubt that the chib was going to be favoured with ideal weather for the opening day of the meeting. And so it turned out, as the sun shone brilliantly from its rise seaward until it retired oehind the hills. The promise of seeing good sport under the moat enjoyable condition* attracted a record attendance, and those present saw some of the best racing that ha* ever taken place on other than tbe metropolitan course. Many improvement* have been carried out since the Spring Meeting waa held. From the six-fur.ong post home the course has been thoroughly top-dressed and repaired, its surface being now in excellent ""condition, while the buildings, which have been treated to a new coat of paint, presented quite a spick-
and-»pan appearance. . The aport wu full of interest throughout the afternoon, and U» race for the Empire Handicap, the Clifton Welter, and the Burnaide Handicap waa in each instance an admirable one. Speculation -was very brisk, aS, despite the presence of a.large army of bookmakers, who paid for tbe privilege of ©ailing the odds, the sum of £1911 10b waa passed through the totaliaator, as against £1606 10s on the corresponding day last year. Radium caused some delay at the post, anu swerved as the barrier rose, losing some ground. Step Aside waa the quickest to begin, but soon fell back, and as the was reached Bouncing Bob led by hall a length from Guard of Honour. Radium came fast on the outside from Paparoa, who had got through on the rail*, and won easily by a length and a half; the same distance between second and third. Time, lmin 19 4-sth sec. Waimotu dosed on U.C.L. round the back,» and five furlongs from, home be waa only a length and a half away. D.C.L. easily maintained his advantage, however, and won by two and a half lengths; -fifty yards between second and third. Time, 6min 32 3-sth sec. Dividends —On D.CX., £2 16s; on Waimotu, £2 12s. Raymond) also started. ~ Lillystone gave the starter some trouble, •but an even dispatch was effected, and the mare was the first to show out. Going down the back stretch, Lillystone led by * clear length from Convoy, who waa a length ahead of Tirole, De la Rey being on the latter's quarters. De la Rey then made a forward move, and Tirole went with him each of these horses paasing Convoy, and heading Lillystone about four and a halt fur.ongs from home. De la Rey then took command, and led round the top turn, ft length in front of Tirole, Convoy being m close attendance. The latter ran up on the outside, leaving Tirole, who appeared to get shut out, and almost getting on terma with De la Rey, a fine race resulted in a win for the Seaton Delaval colt by half a length from Convoy. Paasing the half mile past King's Guest dropped back, and Grandstand took up tho running, closely attended by Paparoa, St. Ronald, Quagga, and Beau Seaton. Grandstand held command up to the home turn where Beau Seaton waa on his girths, and Quagga, who had failed to get up between the pair, oame fast on tbe outside. * A grand race resulted in a win for' Quagga by three-quarters of a length. Beau Seaton being a. head in front of Grandstand. King's Guest was a eimilar distance away fourth, Paparoa fifth, and St. Michael next. Time, lmin 33 2-eHh sec.
