WANGANUI, May 24. The Winter Meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club was commenced to-day in fine, but cold, weather. There was a large attendance, inoluding visitors from all parts of tho colony. The racing was most interesting throughout. The Wanganui Steeplechase was a very pretty race, and provided a beautiful exhibition of jumping. The Guard was beaten early in the race, and fell at the Hencoop. Evening led the field throughout, fencing faultlessly. Slow Tom wae going great gun* when he came to the double in front of tbe Btand. He overjumped the first* hurdle, and swerving at the seoond, unseated Cah ill. Creusot was one of the first horses beaten, and ran off at the Hencoop the second time round. Tbe surprise of tbe race was the forward running of Defoe and Waiterere. Nadador also finished well. Auratus won the Conolly Handicap with consummate ease, while Chivalry was not extended in the Bcroue-h Handicap. In the Kaitoke Hurdles, Guelder Rose fell heavily. McMorran receiving a bad shaking. Guelder Rose was badly injured. Needlework also fell, but wae unhurt. The amount put •th—(ugh the machine* was £9232. .as against £9547 last year, a fallins off of £315. Waiterere, Defoe. Cairo, and Tupara. Warterere made his effort at the four, furlong post, where Weimoe waa done with. Warterere could not sustain his run. and dropped beck. Coming to the straight Pipi closed on Evening, while Defoe came with a strong run. Pini was beaten two lengtba by Evening, who finished quite undistreesed. Aiterthe placed hfjrsce came Waiterere.
