OUTRAGES ON WOMEN AND CHILDREN.
GOVERNMENT ACTION TO BE TAKEN. (special to "the press.") AUCKLAND, May 23. During the course of his speech in receiving a presentation from the Seamen's Union last night, the Hon. W. Hall-Jones (Minister for Public Works and Marine) referred to the case in Christchurch recently exposed by Mr T. E. Taylor, M.H.K., in which a four-teen-year-old girl had been wronged, and had died in giving birth to a child. That matter would, Mr Hall-Jones said, have the immediate attention of the Government when Parliament met. The life of a poor child had been destroyed turougn the villainy of a man who escaped punishment, the whole fault being that the law proceedings must be taken within a mouth of the commission of the offence. The law would be amended to provide for a more reasonable time. Another case had occurred in a private hospital in Chriatchurch, where a poor woman waa placed in a strait-jacket, and died from strangulation. The case showed that closer inspection was necessary. Private hospitals and nursing homes must be brought under Government inspection, ana this was a matter which he intended to bring before the House next
