STOESSEL'S MESSAGE TO THE CZAR.
A TERRIBLE SITUATION. "GREAT SOVEREIGN FORGIVE." (Received January sth, 9.43 p.m.) LONDON, January 5. General Stoessel, cabling to the Csar on Sunday states that the Japanese on Saturday, after tremendous explosions under Fort No. 3, maintained a .two hours' infernal bombardment'along the whole line, arid then assaulted the Chinese wall extending from Fort 3 to the Eagle's Nest fort. jThey were twice -"repulsed, the artillery inflicting mush damage. When it was impossible' to longer defend the wall, the Russians retired to the hills at the rear, abandoning the. greater part of the eastern front. "Since we are unable to long defend the new position," the message proceeded, "we must capitulate, but everything is in God's hands. We suffered great losses. The commander of Fort 3 perished in the explosion.
CABLE NEWS.
Groat Sovereign forgive. We have done all that is humanly possible. Judge us but be merciful. Eleven months' ceaseless fighting exhausted our strength. Only a quarter of the defenders remain, and half of these are invalids, who occupy twenty-seven versta of fortifications without support, and without intervals for even tho briefest repose. The men are reduced to shadows."
