RUSSIANS RETIRE ON THEIR MAINPOSITIONS. STUBBORN BUT USELESS DEFENCE. (Received October 14th, 9.36 p.m.) LONDON. October 14. General Kuropatkin. reports fierce fighting on Wednesday night and Thursday. "The Japanese," he says, "concentrated great forces against our centre and right wing, and wo found, it necessary to reinforce our advanced positions. After very desperate fighting the centre on Thursday afternoon retired on our main position, the right retiring at nightfall. Numerous Japanese attacke were repulsed, the Russians assuming the offensive. The Tomsk regiment made an especially heroic defence of one advanced position. On Wednesday night our right recaptured at the point of the bayonet a, viltage lost earlier in the day. Severe fighting continues on our left flank for the possession of a pass. Our troops waled almost inaccessible rocks and held their ground for two days. Our losses are considerable. I have ordered a continued and stubborn defence."
