j Mr and Mrs J. Reid (Elderslie), Mr J. Studholme, Mr and Mrs A. Rutherford, junr., Mr W. Macfarlane, Dr. and Mrs Hargreaves (Akaroa), and Mr and Mrs W. P. Studholme arrived in town last evening. Rev. J. Mackenzie left for Geraldine by the express yesterday morning. Mr A. H. S. Lucas was a passenger for tho south by the express yesterday morning. Mr Justice Cooper will take up the worjc of Mr Justice Williams in Dunedin, the latter proceeding to Wellington to take the criminal session there. Mr and Mrs Heppell. Mr H. E. Beveridge (Scotland), and Mr R. Gordon Bell are visitors to Chrißtchurch. Mr A. P. O'Callaghan went south by the early train yesterday morning. Mr R. E. Bannister left for Wellington last evening. Mr and Mrs R. M. Macdonald leave Christchurch to-morrow to join the Atbenic, which takes her departure from Wellington for London the following day. Mr W. B- Denshire resigned the office of Chairman of the Ashburton High School Beard yesterday. Mr Denshire is taking a trip to the Old Country, and leaves Ashburton on May 12th. It is probable he will take up his residence elsewhere on bis return to New Zealand. Mr Charles R. Ford, pursuer of the Antarctic exploration vessel Discovery, visited Ashburton on Saturday, and addressed the scholars at the Hampstead Anglican Sunday School on Sunday afternoon. He returned to Christchurch yesterday. Mr and Mrs John Carney were entertained at ft farewell social in the Staveley Hall on Saturday, Mr Carney being presented with a silver watch, and Mrs Carney with a gold brooch. After the meeting of the City Council last night the Councillors assembled in the Mayor's room, when Cr. Payling was welcomed back after his lengthy absence. His health was proposed by the Mayor, and in responding Cr. Payling gave an interesting description of his experiences in Australia. Before the gathering dispersed the health of the newly elected Mayor (Mr 0. M. Gray) was honoured. j Mr Watteraton, editor of the Melbourne I "Argus," Is a passenger for Dun-din by tho Manuka, which reached the Bulff yesterday. SuD-Inspector Dwyer, of the local police force, who has been suffering from lumbago, intends going to Hanmer for a week. Mr F. W. Quaife, jun., Oanioru, and Mr and Mrs Cornwall were recent callers at the local agency of the Tourist Department. Last Friday the member* of the Lower High street and Linwood Methodist choirs met at tiie residence of their choirmaster, Mr T. G. Voyce, to present Miss Butterick, a member of the choir, who is leaving for the North Island, with a greenstone heart. Mr D. McOaskell, who is leaving Winchester, on a trip to England, was entertained by his friends and employees at a farewelb gathering on Saturday. Mr McCaskill was presented with a pair of opera glasses by his Winchester employees, a rug by Ids Fairlie employees, and a dressing case by his Winchester friends. Judge Ward has been appointed District Judge for Taranaki, vVanganui, and Wairarapa. Mr C. S. Reeves ha« been appointed South Island representative on the Representation Boundaries Commission.
