GOUT AS A SAFETY VALVE.

We heard recently by cable that Mr Chamberlain had been attacked by gout. Tlie "British Medical Journal" says:— "During the last few years Mr Chamberlain has from time to time suffered from attacks of acute gout, from which he has recovered, and his general health baa not been in any way impaired. Ac ago advances the risk of an attack of gout ia always increased, and, as is well known, Mr Chamberlain is ono of those whose mode of life is essentially sedentary. To such persons acute attacks of gout appear to act as safety valves, and to ba not inconsistent with a long span of life; this was notably the case with the late Earl of Beaconsfield, a man not addicted to active exercise or field sports, who, in spite of, or perhaps by the help of, gout, lived to the ripe age of seventy-seven."
