MR CHAMBERLAIN'S SUCCESSOR.
With regard to the- new Secretary of State forth* Colonies, "M.A.P." writes; —"Probably one of the main reasons why Mr Balfour selected Mr Alfred Lyttelton as his colleague was a certain forlornness in his own position, and tbe tendency that such forlonmess is calculated to create. If a Minister finds that he is at last thrown back on himself, he must seek bio support and his comradeship in men whom he can trust not merely as political associates, but as warm personal friends. Now it is said constantly of Mr Balfour tbat he is not a man of warm, ardent, or frequent affections, and there havo been those who have said that outside of his own family, the ono man Mr Balfour has ever really cared for is Alfred Lyttelton. And.•perhaps that, as much as his talents—which aro far greater than has been represented—is why Mr Lyttelton i* Colonial (Secretary."
