THE VOLUNTEERS.

The division into two battalions of infantry of the North Canterbury Infantry Battalion iff gazetted. The first battalion consists of th* City Guard-, College Rifles, City Ritks. Kaiapoi Rifle*, Rangiora Rifles, Imperial Rifles, and Cycle Corps, and the second battalion consists of the Sydenham Rifles, Liawood Rifles, Civil Service Rifles, Highland Rifles, EUemiere Guards, and Native Rifles.

Tlie E Battery will go into camp at the Heathcote bridge, and have arranged for practice in gunnery. The Ellesmere Guard- on Sunday completed their annual six days' training at Doykston. The attendance has been good and excellent work haa been done. Staff .StTgeunt-Major Hoar waa present a* instructor until Thursday morning, when he left to take charge of the Bangiora camp. On Sunday a church parade was held at St. John's Church, Leeston. the Rev. W. H. Orbell preaching. The Ellesmere Brass Band played tbo men to and from church, and, under Bandmaster Peters played a good programme of music at the camp on Sunday afternoon. Tlie prize given by the Captain for the best kept tent •was awarded to Sergeant O'Boyle's No. 4 section. Tbe officers of the corps are— Captuin T. Biirne, Lieutenants T. Doude and A. Walker.

Hie Ashburton Rifles and Guards, under Captains Dolman and Schwartz, went into camp last evening in tbe Ashburton Domain. Colonel Moore will pay a visit of inspection on Thursday. Lieutenant Hayes, of the Rifles, is acting as quartermaster, and Sergeant McAMster, of the Guards, as Quartermaster-Sergeant. ■•Mr Georgo Stoddnrt, of Ashburton, formerly lieutenant of the Arrowtown Volunteer Corps, has been placed on the honorary unattached list as lieutenant.

The Canterbury Mounted Rifles and the Ellesiiiero Mounted Rifles went into camp at Motukarara yesterday. Major Snow, Commanding the First Battalion North Canterbury Mounted Rifles, visited the camp yesterday.
