RAILWAY FATALITY AT TIMARU. As the North express started from Timaru at about lntlf-past four yesterday afternoon, a newspaper runner named Howard attempted to cross in front of the engine. He was knocked down and run over by the train, death being instantaneous. The man s body was dreadfully mangled by the accident. As far as can be ascertained, the deceased was crossing from the east side of the railway lines to the platform when the fatality occurred. Ho was a man of about forty years of age. It is supposed that he did not observe the train. ..
An inquest was held before Mr H. W. Bishop, at Amberlev, touching the death of a eleven-month-old infant named Diamond, who died suddenly the previous day at Scargill. A verdict of death from congestion of the lungs was returned.
(rR£S3 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) AUCKLAND, October 28. A young man named booch, employed as a painter, nut death with terrible suddenness this morning. When stepping oil an electric car, he made an awkward attempt to alight at the front, when tns car was moving slowly. He was thrown violently under the wheels, and his body was mangled terribly in a few seconds, though the car only moved a few yards.Jacks had to be utilised to raise the car from the body. Death must have been instantaneous:. No blame is attributed to anyone, the accident being due to Gooch s method of jumping from tho car.
