THE KANAKA QUESTION.
A DISTURBING DEVELOPMENT. United Press Association —By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.
(Received October 29th, 1.22 a.m.) BRISBANE, October 28.
Sir Henry S. Jackson, tho High Commissioner for tho Western Pacific, and the Premier have conferred on the kanaka question. It transpires that at the beginning of the month the Government Resident at tho Solomons gave notice that recruiting islanders for the sugar plantations and the return of boys whose time Intel expired would no longer be allowed. This was a very serious matter for Queensland, more particularly as trouble would probably ensue when the Solomon Islanders now in Queensland desired to return. The Premier communicated wit It the Imperial authorities, and was informed that the High Commissioner was coming to Qu same land to deal with the subject. It is understood that as a result of today's conference the veto on recruiting and returning islanders will be immediately removed.
