ROAD BOARDS.
WAII’ARA. The Waipara Road Board met on September Tilt. Present—Sir George Clifford (chairman), Messrs J. C;umTi>n and R. A. Forrester. The Engineer of the Cheviot Railway forwarded plans of a road deviation near Greta Peaks, which was approved. Mr Tonkin was granted permission tit plough gorse on a road. A petition was received asking for a sheep bridge over the Waikari Creek, near Scargill. It was decided to undertake the work, subject to a certain amount of the cost being contributed by the petitioners. A petition from the employees of the Boa id was received, asking for an increase of 6d j>rr day in their wages. It was decided to ascertain the rate of wages paid by neighbouring Boards before considering the question. The nest meeting will be held on October 12th. Tenders will be invited for works on the North Waikari Valley, Mount Lookout, and North roads. Accounts were passed for £lB6 11s. KOWAI. A meeting of the Kowai Road Board was held on Heptemlwr 3rd. Pi wnt —Messrs Geo. A. -Mcf.- iii, Vallance, Currie, Shaw, and Hall. Th l receipts for the month amounted to £59 8s Bd, and the paysheet for £7B 4s 5d was passed for payment. The lenders of dames Baize!!, for contracts! No. 250 and 251. delivery of shingle at Is 4jd and Is Ijd respectively, and that of A. Vallance for hire of traction engine for road grading, were accepted. The Surveyor was instructed to effect repairs to Smith's bridge, construct an open ford at Iho junction of Gray's road with the North road, obtain shingle for the Broomfield contract off unformed road line near Broomfield station, to repair the Lower Ashley road, and to report on Caughey’s road requirements at next meeting. Wm. Lilley was employed to work the road grader. The Surveyor was instructed to serve several gorse notices under the Public Works Act, and to invite tenders for cutting the office site fences. It was decided to invite fresh offers for an ordinary spring dray. The Clerk was directed to write to the Ashley Road Board for particulars as to an item of expenditure of £250 on the Ashley bridge protective works. ASHLEY. The Ashley Road Board met on September 3id. Present—Messrs Banks (chairinan). Carmichael, Carr, Dob-on. it was agreed, at tlie request of the Mandevilie and Rangiora Road Board, to support a local Bill allowing the Ashley county two representatives on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, on condition -that the Board’s share of the cost does not exceed £2. The Kowai Road Board’s suggestion that the two Boards join in the purchase of a rood grader was declined. Messrs Wyira-Williams and Brown wrote asking the Board to give notice to the occupiers of R.R. 50654 and R.S. 8871 to clear gorse, etc., off the road. The Board acknowledged no liability in the matter. It. was decided to proceed with the closure of the road. .Messrs Meyer Bros, offered to lease, a vacant section at the Ashley Gorge bridge. They will be asked io define the section, as the Board did not know of its existence. The following tenders were accepted:—l). Fitzgerald, clearing ditch at Gorge bridge, 5s per chain; L. Doyle, shingling InglLs’s road, 2s 3d per yard; J. Ponsonby, shingling Gorge bridge road, 2s per yard. It was decided to call tenders for clearing tussocks off the road between the Round Hill Bush road and the Okuku River, and to take action against- any person damaging the footbridges erected by the Board. Accounts to the amount of £154 17s 9d were passed for payment. MOUNT HUTT. The Mount Hutt Road Board met on September 7th. Present—Messrs Million, Morgan, Power, and McLean. It was decided to shingle a further 35 chains on the back track and 10 chains in the township, Methven, to form about one mile of road at Latiriston, one mile of the Railway road, Lyndhurst, and one mile of the Gully road, Methven, and to form a portion of the Ashburton River road with the grader. Mr Fitzgerald will lie given a month’s employment in working the grader with his traction engine, and Mr Ross a fortnight’s work. Mr D. Murphy, who has a. contract for shingling at Highbank, will bo informed that unless satisfactory progress is made before next Board day the penalties will be enforced. The Clerk of the Ashburton County Council wrote in reference to the cost- of placing pipes instead of a bridge at Methven. It was decided to offer to contribute £2O toward the cost. Mr Millton read n resolution, dealing with storm water from the Dry Creek, that lie had prepared to lay before the County Council, and it was decided to take a" legal opinion on it. Accounts amounting to £126 17s 6d were passed for payment. RICCARTON. A meeting of the Riccarton Road Board was held ou September 14th. Present — Messrs S. A. Staples (chairman), H. J. Derrett, J. J. Dougall, J. E. Hanson, and G. W. Thomas. The surveyor reported that Mr Hetiwood had agreed to allow the Board to cut a corner off his land to widen (Middleton road. Pipes across the North road, at the School corner, had been replaced by a culvert. The metal on the Riccarton road was worn out. A Committee of the whole Board was set up to go into this matter. Mr T. Caverhill and others petitioned tho Board to grade and metal Vague's road, and form a. footpath. The surveyor was instructed to report as to the position of boundaries and dedication rf this road. The Minister of Public Health wrote that a clause would be inserted in the Public Health Act to meet the requirements of this Board as to separate rating in portions of the district for sanitation purposes. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote that arrangements Had been made to top or fell the trees along the North road atKapnatohe Hamlet. The District Engineer of Railways, in reply to tut application for trees to plant around the gravel pit at Middleton, wrote that trees could only he given for planting on public reserves. The Chairman and Mr Thomas were appointed to sign the rate books. Accounts amounting to £197 15s Id were passed for payment. WEST EYRETON. The West Eyreton Road Board met on September 14th. Present—Messrs H. J. Homdl (chairman), Moderate .and .T. Smith (2). Messrs Booth and McDonald wrote, staling that they would arrange for a trial of the road grader at West Eyreton as early as possible. The Pay-master-General notified that £57 3s Bcl. balance of subsidy on rales, had been paid to the Board’s credit. It was cWdded to borrow from the Bank of New!Zealand £3OO, by way of overdraft. A general rate uf }d in the £. payable on October sth, was struck. The following tenders for breaking stones were accepted:—On Wolf’s road, James Robinson £5 10s; on School road, James Robinson £1 15s. Accounts amounting to £22 16s 2d were passed for payment. EYRETON. The Eyreton Road Board met on September 7th. Present—Messrs James Wright (chairman), Burgin, Dixon, Evans and Skevington. Tho Treasury wrote that the balance of the Eyre protective works loan would be paid in a few days. The Paymester-Genera! wrote that £iso 19s 7d had been paid to the credit of the Board, on account of Government grant of £ for £ for the Eyre protective works. It was agreed to contribute with the rest of the local bodies in the Ashley County in promoting a Bill to give the Ashley County another member on the Lyttelton*Harbour Board. The surveyor was authorised to arrange for raising the bank at the head of Mr Lynskey's land. The rebuilding of the culvert across the North road at Penweli's was deferred until autumn. A furd is to be made across Chapman’s Creek on the north side of the South Eyre road. A general rate of ?d in the £. payable on September 23rd, was struck. Accounts amounting to £289 8s Id were passed.
