THE JAPANESE WARSHIPS.
SUGGESTED VISIT TO LYTTELTON,
The chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr A. Rave), received yesterday morning the following te'egnun from the Right Hon. tho Premier, with regard to the eugtfested vlvit of the J»pant«e fleet to Lvttelton: —
" I have sent the followin-a telegram to 0. Laurenson, Esq., M.H.R., nrA tho Mayors of Christcbnrch and Lyttclton, which I subjoin for your information. 'In li--. , - pect to the invitation from you respecting the Japanese men-of-war visiting LytiElton, I sent the letter to his Excellency tLe Governor, but I find thie course would take foins time, as it would have to be sent Home to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, fi-om him it would go to the Japanese Ambassador, and thence to tlie Japanese Government. Consequently, bcfnr? any uctiun eou:d be taken, if this official course were pursued, possibly tlie vessels would have arrived here and departed. Might I suggest a straight cut from yourself and th* Mayor of Christcliurch by sending an invitation to Mr Aldrich. Japanese- Consul at Wellington? , " Mr Kaye telegraphed, in reply, as follows:— "Hon. R. J. Seddon, Wellington—ln reply to memo, I have to thank you for telegram re Japanese fleet, and would kindly a&k you to hnve the Board's letter of 2Ctn to Marine Minister and panoramic vitw of Port Lyttelton handed to the Japanese ConMjJ in Wellington, askin.g him to endeavour to have effect given to the invitation contained therein, to vipit tlie Port of Lyitelton.—A. Kaye, Chairman."
